“Sthira Sukham Asanam”
~ Patanjaliyogasutra 2.47
“THIS WORKSHOP IS INTENTED TO PRESENT ASANAS IN THE SAME LIGHT AS IT HAS PERPETUALLY BEEN REPRESENTED IN AUTHENTIC AND AUTHORITATIVE YOGIC TEXTS AT DIFFERENT POINTS IN TIME, IN TERMS OF DEFINITION, TECHNIQUE AND THE OUTCOME”
The reference of Asana has been seen from Pre – vedic age of Asana, Vedic texts like – Atharva Veda (around 1500 BCE) and Bhgvadgita; and Yoga’s most authoritative and comprehensive text found till date is the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali in 2nd century BCE.
The word Asana has become synonymous with Yoga today, the field of this simple practice, in the last forty to fifty years has diversified into numerous branches; in many cases the practice seems to have lost its soul due to dilution. The very foundation of Asana practice has been compromised it seems, especially outside of India, where the perception of this practice has been reduced to a mere workout or a category of Isometric exercise.
Key Takeaway:
We will explore whether asanas are just physical in nature, whether they are movement with awareness or pure stillness of the body and the mind.
In this workshop we will discover the topic by exploring the answers to four questions;
What is an Asana?
How is Asana done?
Why is Asana done?
What are the benefits of Asanas if done as per definition and technique?
Flow of the Session:
This online workshop will be a combination of theory and Asana practice.
Who can Attend?
For attending this workshop, no experience of yoga is necessary.
What to Bring?
Yoga mat and water bottle.
