What is the Vijñāna-bhairava-tantra?
The term “Vijñāna” signifies consciousness, while “bhairava” represents the three aspects of the Divine: ‘bha’ (bharana, meaning support), ‘ra’ (ravana, meaning withdrawal), and ‘va’ (vamana, meaning expansion). Tantra” refers to a method or technique, specifically the method of transcending ordinary consciousness.
Bhairava embodies consciousness (vijnana or bodha or Chaitanya), characterized by Absolute Freedom manifesting as will (ichchha), wisdom (jnana), and action (kriya).
The state of Bhairava represents the ultimate meditation (Dhyana) experience, where the bliss of unity with the entire universe is embodied as Bhairavi or the Shakti of Bhairava.
The Path to Unity with Universal Consciousness
The Vijñāna-bhairava-tantra teaches that meditation techniques are not fixed methods but processes, with Dharana (concentration) being a critical component leading to Dhyana (meditation). Unlike the Dharana described in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, Dharana in the Vijñāna-bhairava-tantra naturally progresses to Dhyana on its own accord.
Practices such as Prana Sadhana, Japa Sadhana, Bhavana Yoga, and Shoonya (void) experiences, along with heightened awareness, are the means to merge with Bhairava.
Relevance to Mental Health
In this workshop we will turn our focus on Mental health. In Yoga Shastra, Mental Health denotes a calm and tranquil mind that becomes an ideal channel for buddhi (intellect) to operate most effectively manner in getting appropriate work done from indriyabe ins (senses) and at the same time be in a perfect harmony with the atman (the Self). Thus, Vijnana Bhairava dharana practices endows their practitioners with a rare success both in worldly and spiritual domains of their life and living, most easily and smoothly.
Significance of Dhyana Practice
The Vijñāna-bhairava-tantra provides detailed guidance on meditation, making it accessible for both beginners and meditation practice.
