What is Shatkarma?
Six cleansing Process popularly known as Shatkarma or Sodhana kriya in Hathyogic text, is a set of six practices meant for cleaning the six different areas of the human body. If looked from an analytical point of view-all the yogic practices are in some way a cleansing process.
Shat Kriyas or Yogic cleansing processes are an integral part of Yoga as they help eliminate accumulated toxins from the system. The body functions like a machine and it has to be continuously cleansed and maintained.
It is the cleansing of toxins like mucus, gas, acid, sweat, urine and stool which improves its functioning. Kriyas also help to prepare the body and condition it for the proper practice of yogasana and pranayama.

Gherandasamhita considered that all the yogic practices contribute towards Ghatasuddhi i.e. purification of the body.

Shatkarmas cleanses and activates all vital organs of the body especially the digestive, respiratory, circulatory and nervous systems. They are preventive as well as curative in nature. One’s capacity to digest, taste, work, think and feel is enhanced wonderfully.

धौतिर्वस्तिस्तथा नेतिस्त्राटकं नौलिकं तथा।
कपालभातिश्चैतानि षट्कर्माणि प्रचक्षते ।। २.२२।।
- Dhauti – Cleansing of the mouth & food pipe
- Basti – Cleansing of the large intestine (lower abdomen)
- Neti – Cleansing of the nasal passages
- Nauli – Strengthening of the abdominal organs
- Trataka – Purification of the eyes
- Kapalbhati – Cleansing of the frontal area of the brain

कर्मषट्कमिदं गोप्यं घटशोधनकारकम् ।
विचित्रगुणसंधायि पूज्यते योगिपुंगवैः ॥ २३ ॥
These shatkarma which effect purification of the body are secret. They have manifold, wondrous results and are held in high esteem by eminent yogis.

About the Facilitators

Shri. Neeraj Singh
Shri. Neeraj Singh is a senior yoga teacher at Kaivalyadhama Yoga Institute, Lonavla. He has been teaching Yoga and offering expert yogic counseling at Kaivalyadhama for many years; with his guidance, many people have benefited. He was the personal assistant and demonstrator of Dr. O. P. Tiwari on various workshops. Shri. Neeraj has been holding a Sunday Asana class on online workshop medium since 2020 with Kaivalyadhama, along with the collaboration of Yoga & Wellness Chandra, Japan (with a consecutive interpretation into Japanese by Dr. Motoko Saito who is a founder of Yoga & Wellness Chandra, Japan) and it has been a huge success. Shri. Neeraj has a deep knowledge of traditional Yoga.
Shri. Banvarilal
Shri. Banvarilal is working as a Yoga Teacher in Health care Center at Kaivalyadhama, Lonavla. He has done his CCY and PGDYEd from Kaivalyadhama, Lonavla. He has been serving with Kaivalyadhama since 2017 and has experience in teaching Yoga. He is working as full time Yoga Teacher. He is very committed to his work and dedicatedly teaches Yoga to the participants at Health care Center. He also manages the role of Boys Warden for the students here at Kaivalyadhama College.

Resource Person

Prof. Ravindranath Bodhe
Prof. Ravindranath Bodhe is an MA (Philosophy & Saṃskṛta), M. Phil. (Philosophy). Worked as Research Officer at the Philosophico-Literary Dept., Kaivalyadhāma for 30 years. Currently he is the Mentor at the same Dept. He has earned immense respect for his enormous contribution in the field of Yoga education.
Dr. Sharadchandra Bhalekar
Dr. Sharadchandra Bhalekar is an Ayurvedacharya and has done his Masters in Counseling and Psychotherapy. He has been working as an Asst. Professor at Gordhandas Seksaria College of Yoga & Cultural Synthesis, Kaivalyadhama, Lonavala. He has authored two books: Pranayama-mudra and Meditation and Anatomy-Physiology of Yoga. Dr. Bhalekar applies a unique blend of modern and traditional approaches to Yoga in his teachings and writings. He has conducted profligate workshops at several National and International conferences.
